Viacom deal with Internet television website Joost

just weeks after stripping google-owned youtube of its video clips, viacom has struck a deal to offer broadcast-quality programs on joost, the internet television website.

viacom said it would make a full range of programs from its mtv and bet networks and paramount pictures available for free viewing at www.joost.com.

new york city-based viacom announced the alliance on tuesday, declining to discuss financial terms and praising joost for creating an online platform that thwarts video piracy.

"were extremely pleased to be working with joost, and couldn't be prouder to be a key partner in the launch of the next generation in broadband video technology," viacom chief executive philippe dauman said in a statement.

joost creators niklas zennstrom and janus friis, the founders of the skype internet telephony service, said the global online television service was designed with a "secure, efficient, piracy-proof" platform.

"we built this platform from the ground up, with companies like viacom in mind," friis said.

"our platform provides scalable distribution, in a completely safe environment that protects the interest of content owners and advertisers, while delighting viewers."

available in a limited "beta" test version, joost boasts a television-like experience enhanced by internet services such as instant messaging and links to other websites.

"we will continue to seek out partners like joost, which has created an exciting breakthrough platform that represents not only a fantastic user experience, but one that is built on a compelling and sustainable business model that respects both content creators and consumers," dauman added.

viacom had youtube remove over 100,000 unauthorized clips of viacom television programs in february after a promised copyright protection system was not installed on the popular video-sharing website.

viacom also complained of failed negotiations to win payment from youtube for use of the clips.
